These are our Guinea Pigs, Princess and Pirate. We have had them over a year now. They live in the gap under our stairs and the children adore them (as do I). The Guinea pigs do not go out in their indoor run during the day when children are around however the children are more than welcome to watch them if they would like. I remind children of the importance of safety as they will nibble at fingers mainly as they are ever hopeful they may be a piece of carrot! The children are welcome though to pet them through the cage with care and are reminded not to do this during feeding times! I also remind the children of hand washing after playing with them or near them. For little ones I will help with the hand washing of course. My niece is currently fascinated by them and being just over 1 I will often just hold her and let her watch them. She loves it when they go to the bottom level and she can sit on the floor and watch them. They are very friendly Guinea pigs - for additional information please ask to see my Pets policy which includes that I clean them regularly.
We are now very lucky and have added an outdoor run for the Guinea pigs to play in. This has been a huge hit with the children who can now sit and watch them happily munching on the grass. The run is very heavy so the children are unable to move it. It is well secured with two fastenings to each door so the children can not let them out by "accident".
(Sadly we now only have Pirate as Princess sadly passed away, while the children were all very upset we talked about it and were open with the children.)
